UNC’s Biggest Unanswered Question: What Happens if Cameron Fens Can’t Play?
The seven-foot transfer is practicing with Carolina but remains ineligible for games, leaving Michael Malone with a frontcourt decision that could shape his first season.
North Carolina’s most unsettled preseason question involves a player who is already on campus, on the roster and participating in practice.
Cameron Fens is permitted to work out, lift, condition and practice with the Tar Heels. He is not currently eligible to play in games, Michael Malone said during his Sept. 3 press conference. The coach expressed hope that the matter would resolve in the coming weeks but did not announce a decision or timetable.
That uncertainty matters because Fens is not an ordinary depth addition.
The seven-foot, 255-pound graduate transfer started all 32 games for South Dakota last season. He averaged 14.4 points, 8.7 rebounds and 1.5 blocks while shooting 57.9 percent from the field. Those numbers would not automatically transfer unchanged from the Summit League to the ACC, but they establish that Fens has handled a substantial college role.
His experience also distinguishes him from Carolina’s other centers. Freshman Sayon Keita is listed at 7-foot-1 and 205 pounds. Sophomore Cade Bennerman is seven feet and 205 pounds after transferring from Northwestern. Alexandros Samodurov, a 6-foot-11 junior, brings professional experience from Greece but profiles as a mobile forward rather than a traditional low-post center.
Fens gives UNC something different: a physically mature interior option with a proven record of scoring, rebounding and staying on the floor for an entire college season.
That does not necessarily make him the frontcourt player with the greatest long-term upside. It may make him the player who raises this team’s floor.
With Fens available, Malone could place a veteran center behind a guard-oriented lineup featuring Terrence Brown, Matt Able and Neo Avdalas. Fens could absorb physical defensive assignments, provide a dependable screener and reduce the pressure on Keita to be immediately ready for extended ACC minutes.
Without him, every other frontcourt role becomes more demanding.
Keita’s development would carry greater immediate importance. Samodurov could be asked to handle more interior responsibility. Jarin Stevenson might spend additional time at center, giving Carolina a quicker and more versatile lineup but sacrificing some size against stronger opponents. Bennerman would move closer to regular rotation duty.
Malone did not dramatize that possibility. Asked what UNC would do if Fens remained unavailable, he pointed to the rest of the frontcourt and answered, “Next man up.”
That is the appropriate coaching response, but it does not erase the roster implications. UNC constructed this group with multiple frontcourt styles available. Removing its most experienced traditional center would change the combinations Malone can comfortably employ, even if it does not leave the roster without alternatives.
It would also place more responsibility on a coaching staff still learning which pieces fit together. Malone has emphasized defense, rebounding, pace and accountability as foundational elements of his program. Fens’ size and production suggest a direct role in at least two of those priorities.
UNC has not publicly provided a final determination, and the current facts do not support predicting one. Fens remains part of the program and continues preparing alongside his teammates. The question is whether that preparation will eventually include games.
Until Carolina receives an answer, its most important frontcourt competition comes with an unusual qualifier. The player who could provide the greatest stability is also the only one whose availability remains unresolved.
