Editorial standards
Sourcing
We prioritize official records, direct announcements, governing bodies and credible reporting. Factual claims should link to the strongest available source. When another outlet breaks a story, we credit and link that outlet rather than presenting its work as our own.
What our labels mean
- Confirmed: supported by an official statement, public record, direct announcement or multiple reliable sources.
- Reported: attributed to a named credible outlet or reporter but not yet officially confirmed.
- Projection: analysis about what may happen, clearly separated from established fact.
- Opinion: commentary and interpretation, not straight reporting.
Quotes and attribution
Direct quotes appear in quotation marks and are attributed to the speaker and source. We paraphrase reporting when quotation is unnecessary and do not fabricate or reconstruct quotes.
Corrections
Material factual errors are corrected promptly and transparently. We note meaningful changes within the article when they alter the reader’s understanding. Minor spelling or style fixes may be made without a correction note. See our corrections page to flag an issue.
Conflicts and access
THN is independent. Access, follows or social interaction from university personnel do not influence coverage. Any material financial or personal conflict related to a story will be disclosed.
Advertising
Paid placements are labeled, do not influence editorial decisions and never imply endorsement by UNC-Chapel Hill. Advertisers sponsor space on THN—not the teams, the University or its athletics department. Sponsored material is visually and verbally separated from editorial coverage.
