UNC Football Set to Begin 2026 Outside the Preseason AP Top 25
The Tar Heels will enter Bill Belichick’s second season without preseason poll expectations—and with an immediate opportunity to change the conversation against TCU.
North Carolina will begin the 2026 season outside the AP Top 25, another indication that the Tar Heels enter Bill Belichick’s second year with plenty to prove following a 4–8 debut season.
The preseason poll placed three ACC teams in the national rankings: Miami at No. 7, SMU at No. 19 and Louisville at No. 24. Clemson received votes, while North Carolina did not appear on a ballot.
That result is hardly surprising after last season, especially with UNC still publicly evaluating its quarterbacks and yet to identify a defensive play caller as of the August 14 media availability. Voters are withholding the benefit of the doubt until Carolina shows that its offseason changes translate to the field.
The conference outlook carries the same message. ACC media members picked North Carolina 15th in the 17-team league, ahead of only Boston College and Stanford. Miami, SMU, Louisville, Clemson and Georgia Tech occupied the top five spots.
The intense attention that surrounded Belichick’s arrival has been replaced by results-based skepticism. For this team, that creates both pressure and freedom: there is no preseason ranking to protect, but there is also little room for a slow start.
Carolina gets an immediate opportunity to change the conversation against an unranked TCU team on August 29 in Dublin. The noon Eastern opener will offer an early look at UNC’s offensive identity, line play and defensive organization—the areas most likely to determine whether the Tar Heels can outperform modest expectations.
A strong showing would not guarantee a ranking, but it would give voters and the wider college football audience a reason to reconsider Carolina quickly. A poor one would amplify the concerns that produced the low conference projection in the first place.
Preseason polls measure perception, not a team’s ceiling. North Carolina now has 12 days to prepare its response.
